I've been writing adventure, thriller, horror & cozy paranormal.

Can I submit a story I've published here on substack? It has a PNW vibe & is leaning toward comical horror? A forest protecting itself….

Hey!

I’ll be updating the submission guidelines soon to reflect our policy on this: you will receive a yes or no within a month, though more often than not it will be within two weeks.

How far afield are you willing to stretch your Seattle theme?

Expand full comment
Emerald City Ghosts's avatar

We’re willing to stretch it quite far. It’s really more of a guideline! 😁 BTW, I read The Wedding Dress the other day and really enjoyed it!

Thank you so much! Most of my short ghost stories are set in England and tend to run well over the word count! 🤣

Emerald City Ghosts's avatar

We would love something set in England and would be very open to something on the longer end. If necessary we could even consider releasing it as a two parter over the course of two issues, or do a special double issue or something!

Ok, I shall have a think about which story to submit 🤣 how long are submissions open for?

Expand full comment
Emerald City Ghosts's avatar

That’s a more complicated answer than I would like it to be! 🤣 general submissions are open indefinitely (we’re a small team so if we get overwhelmed we may have to take a break!) Submissions for the “Seattle” theme are open at least until August 1. I like your work, though, so if I see something of yours come through I’ll make sure to give it a read!

Just wanted to drop in and say hey! I write horror, and am working on my debut novel that will fall into the paranormal/horror/crime genre (think the "Agent Pendergast" series from Preston & Child) it is set across two locations, one of which is the SeaTac area. Have you ever considered publishing excerpts from longer works?

I also have several shorter works that might fit your specs. I think my biggest hurdle (aside from word count) might be adult themes, and/or some fairly graphic death scenes/forensic descriptions. I may still try to submit a few things and see if anything sticks.

In the meantime, please feel free to peruse my Substack to get a feel for what I'm all about. Reach out if you have any questions. 🤘

I would definitely consider publishing excerpts, and for the right piece, the word count is very flexible. I just read “The Mask of Three” on your substack and loved it. That’s absolutely the kind of thing we’re looking for here. We would love it if you wanted to submit!

Thanks for the feedback, and for checking out my work. I will send some submissions today. There is actually a story (not necessarily a prequel) that comes before “The Mask of Three", in that same world… “Blackwood Hollow - Children of the Blood Moon.” It might be cool to publish those in order. I’ll submit both. Also, “The Tignon” (a ghost story inspired by true events) was originally posted as a serial, so another good fit. I’ll work on some submissions, and we can go from there. Thanks for the opportunity!

Can we send more than one story?

Thanks!

Expand full comment
Emerald City Ghosts's avatar

Definitely! I would say go ahead and send up to three (if you sneak in a fourth, we won’t be mad!) since the form is set up for one submission at a time, the current best way to send multiple pieces is by creating multiple submissions!

OK, I have sent you the first one. Over next days I will send you one or two others.

Hello Emerald City Ghosts! I just found you, I am very excited about your project! Are you accepting submissions for non fiction ghost stories?

Expand full comment
Emerald City Ghosts's avatar

That’s a really good question! I would say that isn’t necessarily our wheelhouse, but for a really good piece we might make an exception/ do a special release. What kind of story? Is it something that happened to you personally or more of a historical piece?

Hey! So I just fell deep down a rabbit hole and read several of your posts (including the one on Astoria--that place is near and dear to my heart!). I love what you're doing on your Substack. I've been looking for a blog or podcast that chronicles ghost hunts with lots of pictures and somewhat of a personal-essay type aesthetic, and I'm really happy that you shared yours! If you decide that you would like to submit something, we will happily consider it even though we don't specialize in nonfiction. I think our readers would love your work!
