You park on the far side of the river and make your way to the house. At the top of the crumbling stairs, you knock at the door. No one answers, but low voices and the sound of music (Spotify, Apple Music) draw you inside.

You hang up your coat. Just inside the door, there’s a table with two fishbowls full of slips of paper. One is labeled “Custom Story Giveaway” and the other “Book Giveaway.” You wonder what happened to the fish.

You make your way to the kitchen. There’s a self-serve bar with every drink ingredient imaginable. You make yourself a drink.

In the dining room, you find an ancient book splayed open on the table. As you stare at the paper, the words of a story begin to appear, though you see no pen and no writer.

As you walk toward the sitting room, you see a group of people congregated near the fireplace. As you approach, you’re intercepted by a young man who hands you a sheet of paper. You didn’t realize this was a pasta party, but the menu makes it clear.

You continue toward the group of people by the fire. A man in a top hat and a woman with a veil made of heavy black beads turn to look at you as you approach. You fall into easy conversation. There’s a book of ghost stories on the coffee table, along with dozens of polaroid photos. Your host sits on the sofa, an empty chair beside her.

Before you go, you notice a table near the door. It’s made of reclaimed old growth walnut. A guest book sits in the center, surrounded by candles. As you approach you can feel their warmth.
